Climate Change Case Thrown Out By ECtHR
Following on form last week’s newsletter, the European Court of Human Rights have ruled unanimously that the claims brought again 31 states are inadmissible. They held that the claimants had not used all legal avenues available to them in their home country and therefore no jurisdiction could be established.

Ceiling Collapses At Court In Reading
One of the courtrooms in Reading magistrates court ceiling has collapsed. It left water gushing into the court causing water damage. Building work had previously been undertaken on the ceiling, with staff questioning how effective it was.

Changes To Employment Laws
From 6th April 2024 new changes to employment law take effect. One of the changes is to flexible working, employees can now make two requests a year for flexible working and the employer must respond to requests within 2 months and if they deny the request, they must explain the reasons. Another change is to carer’s leave, employees are now entitled to take one week of unpaid leave a year if they have caring responsibsilities, and this entitlement is available from day one of employment. Other changes include increased protection against redundancy for pregnant employees and more flexibility for paternity leave. Further changes are expected to come into force later in 2024.

SQE Update
It has been announced that 175 candidates were wrongly told they had failed the SQE1 exam. It was only noted when a vast number of appeals were made following the fails. SRA chief executive Paul Philip said the SRA was “really disappointed” by the error and apologised to those affected.
